Dahej Calculator

Dahej Calculator

Dahej Calculator is a thought-provoking web tool designed to challenge and raise awareness about the harmful practice of dowry in South Asian society. Built with a satirical approach, the calculator takes various personal attributes — including age, profession, monthly salary, education level, marital status, home ownership, car ownership, and geographic location — to generate a humorous yet deeply meaningful "dowry value."

The core purpose of Dahej Calculator is not to promote dowry in any way, but rather to use humor as a vehicle for social change. By assigning a monetary value to a person based on superficial criteria, the tool highlights the inherent absurdity and injustice of treating marriage as a financial transaction. Users are prompted to reflect on how society still places invisible price tags on individuals, particularly women, based on their earning potential and material possessions.

The tool operates purely for educational and awareness-raising purposes. It draws attention to the Dowry Prohibition Act of 1961 in India, which legally bans the practice, yet acknowledges that dowry continues to persist in many forms across generations. Through its interactive interface and engaging design, Dahej Calculator encourages users to question prevailing mindsets and start meaningful conversations within their families and communities.

Beyond its comedic facade, the project carries a serious message about gender equality, financial pressure on families, and the urgent need to dismantle regressive traditions that dehumanize individuals. It also provides resources from reputable organizations such as the National Commission for Women, UNICEF India, and UN Women for users who wish to learn more about ongoing efforts to end dowry-related violence and discrimination.

Dahej Calculator serves as a reminder that traditions should evolve with society. It champions the belief that marriages should be built on mutual love, respect, and understanding — not on monetary exchanges or societal expectations. By sharing the tool and discussing its results, users become part of a larger movement advocating for a more equitable and compassionate world.
